Superhumans: Advancing Rehabilitation for War Victims of Ukraine
On 3 September 2024, representatives from the ITF Kyiv office conducted a monitoring visit to the Superhumans Medical Rehabilitation Center in Lviv, Ukraine. This visit reaffirms ITF’s commitment to supporting victims of conflict and improving the quality of medical rehabilitation services. The visit provided an opportunity to directly observe the impact of rehabilitation programs at the center, which continues to serve those affected by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
During the visit, ITF representatives met with patients who are benefiting from advanced rehabilitation services. These meetings offered valuable insights into the progress of patients and the effectiveness of the support provided. The ongoing monitoring process ensures that the services are continually optimized to meet the needs of patients.
Currently, 10 patients are receiving care through support enabled by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, with an additional 13 scheduled to begin treatment by the end of September. Thanks to Slovenia’s generous contribution, the center has been able to acquire state-of-the-art upper limb myoelectric prostheses, which have significantly enhanced the mobility and quality of life for recipients. These advanced prosthetic devices offer greater functionality and independence, essential for daily life.
Ukraine's healthcare system continues to face immense challenges due to the ongoing conflict, particularly in the areas of medical rehabilitation and prosthetics. Around 30,000 individuals are in need of prosthetic devices as a result of injuries sustained in combat and landmine incidents, with approximately 30% requiring multiple limb prostheses.
ITF’s partnership with the Superhumans Center underscores the vital role of international support in addressing the needs of war-affected individuals. The visit highlights the importance of sustained global cooperation to alleviate the suffering of conflict victims and emphasizes the ongoing need for innovation and support in medical rehabilitation. ITF remains committed to working with global partners to enhance rehabilitation services and improve the lives of those impacted by conflict.
