Rehabilitation and Support Efforts in Afghanistan
In partnership with Handicap International Afghanistan (Humanity & Inclusion), ITF’s project is making a meaningful difference for individuals like a 13-year-old boy from Ghazagai village. Through the initiative, he receives regular physiotherapy, using assistive devices such as a walking frame and gymnastic ball to enhance his mobility. His treatment also includes muscle-strengthening exercises, along with training for his caregivers to support his continued progress at home. This case highlights the vital role rehabilitation plays in helping conflict-affected individuals regain their independence and improve their quality of life.
The visit also highlighted the importance of psychosocial support programs. Many survivors of trauma, including those injured by landmines, continue to face emotional and psychological challenges. Counselling sessions and group activities are providing critical support, addressing mental health recovery and reducing social stigma.
As the project nears completion, ITF remains focused on ensuring that the needs of the most vulnerable individuals, including those suffering from chronic pain and mobility issues, are met through personalized rehabilitation plans. Though progress has been made, the monitoring visit emphasized the ongoing need for support in the region.
Thanks to the support from the U.S. Department of State, ITF has been able to maintain these essential services. However, the scale of humanitarian needs in Afghanistan remains vast, and sustained international cooperation will be vital to maintaining and expanding these efforts beyond the project’s conclusion.
